Summary
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the sulfatase enzyme family. Sulfatases hydrolyze sulfate esters from sulfated steroids, carbohydrates, proteoglycans, and glycolipids. They are involved in hormone biosynthesis, modulation of cell signaling, and degradation of macromolecules. This protein displays arylsulfatase activity at acidic pH, as is typical of lysosomal sulfatases, and has been shown to localize in the lysosomes. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jun 2012]

Comment Type Description
Biophysicochemical Properties Kinetic parameters: KM=4.2 mM for p-nitrocatechol sulfate ; Vmax=63.5 umol/min/mg enzyme toward p-nitrocatechol sulfate ; pH dependence: Optimum pH is 5.4. ; Temperature dependence: Most efficient at 45-50 degrees Celsius. ;
Cofactor Name=Ca(2+); Xref=ChEBI
Enzyme Regulation Inhibited by phosphate. The phosphate forms a covalent bond with the active site 3-oxoalanine.
Function Displays arylsulfatase activity at acidic pH with pseudosubstrates, such as p-nitrocatechol sulfate and also, but with lower activity, p-nitrophenyl sulfate and 4- methylumbelliferyl sulfate.
Ptm Glycosylated.
Ptm N-glycosylated.
Ptm The conversion to 3-oxoalanine (also known as C- formylglycine, FGly), of a serine or cysteine residue in prokaryotes and of a cysteine residue in eukaryotes, is critical for catalytic activity.
Sequence Caution Sequence=BAA76845.2; Type=Erroneous initiation; Evidence= ;
Similarity Belongs to the sulfatase family.
Subcellular Location Lysosome {ECO
Tissue Specificity Widely expressed, with very low expression in brain, lung, heart and skeletal muscle.
