Lipidomics in Rare Disease Diagnosis and Therapeutic Monitoring

Synopsis

This webinar will give an overview of diseases resulting from inborn errors of lipid metabolism, in particular disorders related to cholesterol metabolism and transport.
The seminar will cover:
Current mass spectrometry methods used in clinical chemistry and academic research laboratories for sterol and bile acid analysis. How lipidomics in combination with genomics can identify rare metabolic disorder and characterise variants of uncertain significance, i.e. a genetic change yet to be known to be harmless or disease causing. I will also give an example of how lipidomics is used in monitoring response to hematopoietic stem cell transplant in Wolman disease.

About Prof. Yuqin Wang

Prof Yuqin Wang is a Professor of Biochemistry at Swansea University Medical School. She obtained her PhD in Biochemistry at Karolinska Institute, Stockholm. After her PhD, she first undertook training in proteomics in industry, then joined Prof William Griffiths’ lab as a postdoc, where she specialised in LC-MS for sterol analysis. She is a co-inventor of the US patent, “Kit and method for quantitative detection of steroids”. She has extensive experience in applying mass spectrometry based lipidomics to identify aberrant cholesterol metabolites associated with dysregulated cholesterol metabolism and transport disorders and in studying sterol-protein interactions.
