How Glycosphingolipids Modulate the Plasma Membrane Proteome Influencing Neuronal Activity

Presented by: Janet Deane

Synopsis

In this seminar we will show how disruption of glycosphingolipid metabolism in neurons causes catastrophic loss of function. We show that sialylated lipids are crucial for the correct assembly and composition of the neuronal synapse explaining the severe phenotypes in GSL-related diseases.

About Janet Deane

Janet completed her PhD at The University of Sydney in 2004 before leaving Australia to pursue postdoctoral studies in Oxford. In 2009, Janet moved to the University of Cambridge before being awarded a Royal Society University Research Fellowship to start her independent lab in 2011. Janet established her lab in the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research (CIMR) and built a multidisciplinary programme of research exploring the role of glycosphingolipids in neurodegenerative disease. In 2020, Janet was awarded a Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellowship and uses a range of methods including iPSC neuronal models, CRISPR technology, bespoke lipid profiling, advanced proteomics, molecular dynamics and machine learning approaches to explore how disruption of glycosphingolipid metabolism drives neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative brain disorders.
